CHAPTER 8

And so, the preparations for our night of sleuthing began. It turned out that preparing last-minute invisibility potions was something of a tall order, even for a potion witch as gifted as Piper, so she needed the assistance of Rosemary and me to make sure she got the job done on time.

We prepared the potion in the apartment bathroom, under the guise of dying and styling Rosemary’s hair. This was mostly for the benefit of the cuckoo clock, and our assumption that someone might be watching us through that thing at any given moment. Changing Rosemary’s hair color was a simple three-second incantation, performed by herself. She went from mousy blonde to bright red.

To get the potions done on time we had to move fast and listen to Piper’s rapid-fire instructions via the telepathic loop. Invisibility potions were quite complex and required over fifty ingredients to combine in less than one hour. Each ingredient also had very specific time windows, making it even harder.

“Sage, take the onion essence,” Piper said, throwing a drawstring pouch at me. “You need to add half of that bag in thirty seconds, and then another half a minute after that.”

“Yes ma’am,” I said in mock salute. Rosemary and I’d already quickly learned there was no time for questions whenever Piper threw something at us.

“Rosemary, reduce these leather flakes in that frog broth. It’s the small cauldron on the toilet.”

“I know what frog broth looks like; you bat brain!” Rosemary sniped. Piper launched the bag of ingredients at her a little harder than necessary.

“Thirty counter stirs, six stirs with widdershins, four with deosil—” Piper muttered to herself. “Sixty seconds of rest…”

“Where are you getting all of these ingredients from anyway?” I asked, peering around the cauldron at the large bag perched in the bath behind Piper.

She looked at me and shrugged. “Huh? This is just my standard components bag. I take it with me everywhere I go.”

I raised one brow at the checkered bag. It was so large it would struggle to fit in a trashcan. “I’ve never seen you with that before today.”

“Sure, you have. Normally it fits on my waist. It can be reduced in size. Rosemary, add those leather flakes!” Piper barked.

Rosemary, currently distracted by a magazine she had found on the toilet’s cistern, flinched at Piper’s voice. “Sorry!”

I’m not going to lie, mixing the invisibility potions was hard work. If Rosemary and I had attempted to do so without Piper’s help it would have been a guaranteed failure. Fortunately, with Piper’s assistance, we got through the mixing without incident. By the time the clock chimed eleven, we had two potions of invisibility stopped in glass bottles.

“Word of warning, we’ve had to rush these they’re not the best,” Piper said as she set the potions in a safe place. “They’re going to taste pretty bad, and they’re not going to have the best potion grade.”

“Potion grade?” I asked.

“Yeah. It’s basically how well a potion turns out. The top grade is S, which stands for Superior.
